LMS Platform for Online Continuing Education

Abstract

A learning management system (LMS) is a software application used in higher education that provides a repository for course documents and a platform for course communications. Pitt currently uses Blackboard as its learning management system for matriculated students enrolled in a University academic program. Because that system is optimized for semester-based, credit bearing courses, it presents challenges to Schools wishing to offer continuing education courses to learners not enrolled in a Pitt academic program. This Pitt Seed Project proposal has requested funding to purchase a platform that will host online continuing education courses targeted to non-matriculated working professionals. Drawing on the breadth and depth of faculty expertise in Pitt’s professional schools and with support from the instructional design resources within the Teaching Center, we will use this funding to offer leading edge online continuing education programs to learners around the world interested in advancing their careers.
